Slim Down With These Pool Workouts

Posted on: July 28th, 2017 by

As the temperatures rise and going for a run or doing a circuit workout sounds more like torture than fitness, why not take your exercise regimen to the pool? As your Atlanta pool service team, we know that in-pool exercises and pool workouts are a great way to stay fit and cool even on the hottest summer days. The addition of water adds a new level of challenge to even simple exercises, so it’s easy to get in a quick, great workout and still have time to relax poolside. If you’re new to pool workouts or just want to shake up your current routine, try out these moves to burn some calories and build those muscles in the process.

Jumping Jacks

Even out of the water, jumping jacks are an easy and quick way to get your heart rate up and start burning some calories. With the added resistance of the pool, this cardio-booster sets you up for a solid in-pool workout. The best part is this doesn’t require any special equipment – just do a jumping jack like you would on land and you’re in business.

Seahorse

For this one you’ll need a pool noodle to help keep you afloat. The Seahorse is a move to target the abs, upper and lower, and keep your heart pumping in the process. With your hands on the pool noodle, dive forward until you’re fully extended through your torso and arms, but your feet are still firmly planted on the pool’s ground. At this point, you should be hinged at the waist. Pull your knees up to your chest and bring them back to the ground. Repeat for as many reps/sets as you desire.

Side Kicks

Similar to jumping jacks, side kicks will more specifically target your obliques and glutes on each individual side. Balancing on your left or right foot kick your other leg out to the side. Kick as high as you can comfortably (or rather, just a little uncomfortably – but don’t pull anything!) and bring the leg back down to your side. Try 12 reps on each side and decide how many sets you feel comfortable with after that.

Laps

A classic choice, but extremely effective. Hopping in the pool and swimming some laps is a phenomenal way to get some cardio in without sweltering in the heat. You can do as many or as few as you like, but try to challenge yourself. And don’t be surprised when your whole body is sore the next day.

It’s amazing how many muscles are required to keep your body afloat when you’re working out in the pool. Pool exercises are a great addition to any workout regimen but especially beneficial in the hot summer months.
