Perhaps you have decided to not close your pool for winter and go through pool winterizing. Here in the Atlanta area, many pool owners do opt for that option. If that is the case, we have some partial pool winterizing tips so you can keep your pool open during the winter. If you do choose to keep your pool open, you will still want to ensure you have ongoing pool maintenance and service to make sure your systems are working.
Now that summer is over, make sure your pool gets a thorough cleaning. This should include vacuuming and scrubbing the walls and floors.
Take a moment to clean your filter. In the winter months, you need to make sure that water is flowing efficiently, and a clean filter will help ensure that is the case.
The key to partial pool winterizing is keeping the water moving. After all, water that is not moving will freeze. So, your pump system needs to be working and it will need to be properly maintained throughout the winter months. In the colder months, you will want your pump running during the coldest time of the day (or night) for at least five hours. Again, this circulation when it is the coldest will help prevent freezing.
You may want to consider investing in freeze protection controls for your pump, especially if you are going to have periods of time when you will be away from home, such as a winter vacation. Freeze protection controls measure the air temperature and then activate the pump when a minimum temperature is reached. If you do not wish to invest in automated freeze controls, then you will want to set up some alerts to notify you when the temperate drops so you can turn on your pool’s pump.
Even with partial pool winterizing, you will want to maintain the proper levels of your pool. Your pH levels are alkaline dependent as alkaline helps prevent your pH levels from bouncing up and down. Depending on the water in your area, you will want to maintain an alkalinity of 80-120 ppm. Your pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8 while your calcium hardness should be 200-400 ppm.
Algae does like the winter and it doesn’t go dormant in the winter months. So, you will want to make sure you use algaecide to kill any existing algae in you pool as well as prevent any new blooms from forming.
When you are not using the pool, please cover it up. This will keep debris out of it, as well as help prevent the water from freezing. Also, you will save some money on heating.
