Pool Winterization Tips

As we approach the end of the pool season, it’s time to start thinking about closing your pool down for the winter. Nobody’s happy when this time comes around every year, but hopefully you enjoyed your pool enough this summer that you’re looking forward to opening it in the spring.

Here are some tips that will help make it easier to get your pool closed for the winter and keep it in good shape for opening next year.

Tip #1: Let a Professional Do It

Getting your pool closed properly can be a cumbersome process if you’re doing it on your own. If you don’t do it right, you run the risk of damaging your pool equipment, which can be expensive to repair or replace.

At Allen Pool Service, we believe that you should focus mostly on enjoying your pool and leave the work to us. We can do it more efficiently and always get it right. Let us close your pool. We will take good care of it and make sure your equipment is protected. Then the pool will be easier to open in the spring.

Tip #2: Follow Our Pre-Closing Checklist

However, if you do want to close your pool on your own, we offer a pre-closing checklist that helps you get ready to do it. Planning ahead, getting organized, and gathering supplies ahead of time will go a long way toward making the job go more smoothly.

Start this long before it’s time to close the pool to make sure you have the supplies in time. Especially these days, key chemicals and tools can be in short supply at pool-closing time.

Tip #3: Clean Thoroughly

5 Tips to Get Your Pool Ready for WinterAn essential part of closing your pool is cleaning it. It’s important that you clean it thoroughly. Because you’ll be cleaning it less frequently over the winter, you can get a lot more buildup of algae and debris than between cleanings in the summer. This makes it important to thoroughly clean your pool during the closing process. Otherwise, the buildup and debris can damage or discolor your pool.

Tip #4: Evaluate Your Pool Cover

Your pool cover is an essential tool for protecting your pool through the winter months. Now’s the time to evaluate it and make sure it’s up for the job. First, you want to inspect it before it’s time to close the pool. If it’s damaged, decide whether you want to repair it or replace it.

If it’s time to replace your pool cover, there are many good pool cover options. While solar covers are efficient and inexpensive, there are other covers that might be better choices for your pool.

Tip #5: Put Periodic Maintenance on the Calendar During Winter

Don’t forget that you have to maintain your pool all winter. Neglecting your pool over the winter can make it hard to open in the spring, and, yes, it can lead to pool damage that will be expensive to fix.

Keep monitoring the water chemistry to avoid microorganism growth. This includes adding a little more chlorine for good measure. Also monitor your pool for freezing risk. If the pool starts to freeze, warm it up to avoid water expansion that can crack your pool foundation. Also, clean the pool every once in a while, and remove water from the top of your pool cover after each rainstorm or snowstorm.
